These are tricky topics to use in humor. As to ethnicity, ethnicity jokes are wrong, but cultural jokes are alright. The difference is that cultures are naturally different, and to joke about certain aspects of other cultures can be funny and alright when in a kind spirit. Yet, when it comes to ethnicity, there is no difference other than place of origin. That, in and of itself, does not seem to be able to be joked with. For jokes about a group imply differences, which there are none of any significance between ethnicities. Thus to joke is to create artificial differences, which is wrong. As far as physical deformity goes, I think that that is wrong. Jokes there are based on unavoidable problems that someone is struggling with. It is like joking about someone with cancer, it is in bad taste. As far as gender and age go, I see no problem in joking with a kind spirit. There are natural differences between the natures of most men and women, as between the ages. You need not look farther than politics to see this, women and young people vote more Democrat while old and men vote Republican. This does not make one better than the other, but jokes are about the differences and pointing them out. Obesity I am unable to answer because truly, it falls in the category of chosen problems. Unlike gender and age, it is about someone’s personal problems. Yet, unlike Physical Deformities, it is generally the person’s choice. It is a hard issue and I do not feel right in making a judgement on its legitimacy in jokes.
