Quick Thoughts: Debate

Jul 24, 2012 by

This past week I had two spirited debates with older friends that I have known for years. What they were about is unimportant. What is important is that both individuals would be considered bright, intelligent people, but their arguments were word for word what they read in newspapers, heard on talk radio, or saw on television news. Both arguments were poorly defined, illogical, and neither had evidence. We, as a country, can not maintain self-government by regurgitation of what we think we learn from the media. If we do not elevate our discourse based on our own research, reasoning, and conclusions we will become mindless drones and perish as individuals.
